About the museum

The Museu de l'Aquarel·la was born in 1989, when the painter Josep Maria Martínez Lozano, an adopted son of Llançà, donated part of his private collection of watercolours to the town council. It presents itself as the first museum in Spain devoted to this genre and aims to champion watercolour across the country.

In addition to works by Martínez Lozano himself, the holdings include pieces by other artists, among them Grau Sala, Ramon Reig, Lloveras and Miquel Farré, which show the development and diversity of watercolour in Spain. Since its foundation the museum has organised exhibitions and prizes that have expanded the collection through donations and acquisitions, to nearly two hundred watercolours.

The museum currently occupies a temporary room on the Plaça Major of Llançà, where a selection of works by leading landscape painters of the genre is displayed, focusing mainly on subjects from the town itself.
