About the museum
The Paul Soyris municipal archaeology museum displays only remains from excavations carried out in the commune of Murviel-lès-Montpellier. In about ten display cases, sculptures, inscriptions and funerary objects bear witness to the occupation of the site during the Neolithic and the Gallo-Roman period.
A large part of the collection comes from the Castellas archaeological site, north of the village. This ancient settlement, the chief town of the Gallic people of the Samnagenses, emerged at the beginning of the 2nd century BCE. It covers more than 20 hectares and has a largely preserved fortification system. Excavations there offer a site very well suited to studying the Romanization of a Gallic town, and new discoveries may still join the museum.
The museum holds the “Musée de France” label and is run by the town hall.
