About the museum
The museum is named after the Sarret de Grozon family, who bequeathed their mansion with its furniture and collections to the town of Arbois in 1902. Madame de Sarret kept the right of use until her death in 1931; the museum opened in 1934.
The collections reflect the taste of several generations of a provincial aristocratic family. They include remarkable porcelain and silverware, as well as paintings from the 17th to 19th century, including works by the Franche-Comté painters Gustave Courbet and Auguste Pointelin. The living quarters have kept their original interior decoration.
The museum also displays pastel portraits of residents of Arbois made by Louis Pasteur as a teenager. A 360-degree virtual tour of the rooms is available online.
