About the museum
The Vendôme museum is a municipal museum bearing the “Musée de France” label. Its collections cover archaeology, painting, sculpture, furniture, folk art and contemporary art. Among the most remarkable pieces are a harp that belonged to Marie-Antoinette and a fine still life by Willem van Aelst.
It was housed in the Bâtiment Régence, a large listed historic building constructed at the end of the 18th century for the Abbaye de la Trinité. Because this building has been sold, the museum closed in September 2022 in order to move to Building H in the Rochambeau district.
The new project brings the museum, the heritage department and the tourist office together in a single cultural and tourism hub. The museum will occupy the second and third floors, about 600 m², with a temporary exhibition hall of about 200 m² on the first floor. A reopening was announced for 2026, but no date has been confirmed so far.
