About the museum

The museum's origins lie in the 1973 session: the then Prince Helmut I wanted to document the history of Lower Rhine carnival and, together with fellow enthusiasts and a Duisburg journalist, collected medals, photos and records from the city archive. After the session the collection continued to grow until the Hauptausschuss Duisburger Karneval decided in 1985 to make it publicly accessible. The museum opened on March 12, 1985, in a rented classroom at the "Am See" school in Duisburg-Wedau.

Due to lack of space, it moved in April 1998 to larger rooms at the "Am Mattlerbusch" community primary school on Wehofer Straße, opposite the Niederrhein-Therme. The sponsor to this day is the Hauptausschuss Duisburger Karneval 1956 e. V. Volunteers look after the collection.

In display cases and vitrines, the museum shows the development of Duisburg carnival up to the present day. On display are more than 4,000 medals from Germany and abroad, prince and president scepters and chains, society caps of the oldest Duisburg societies from 1928 onward, more than 20 dolls in costumes and uniforms, and certificates and pictures. The Kulturausschuss Grafschafter Karneval from Moers is also represented with its own exhibits. The association's archive collects photos and newspaper clippings of the sessions since 1928.
