Mühlenmuseum Hiesfeld
Mill museum in the historic water mill on the Rotbach in Dinslaken-Hiesfeld with over 60 mill models from around the world.
About the museum
The water mill on the Rotbach is one of the oldest buildings in Hiesfeld. It is documented in records since 1347, but grinding presumably took place here as early as the early 13th century. Besides grain, for centuries it mainly processed tree bark for tanneries, which is why it was also called a tan mill (Lohmühle). The half-timbered house was built around 1693.
Since 1976, an association has looked after the Hiesfeld mills; it first saved the tower windmill of 1822 on Sterkrader Straße from demolition and restored it. In 1991 it also took over the water mill, renamed itself Mühlenverein Hiesfeld, and set up a mill museum in the buildings. In 2002 the former lifeguard house of the neighboring outdoor pool was added as a third building.
The core of the collection is more than 60 true-to-detail models of windmills and water mills from many countries, built by dedicated model makers. In the half-timbered house, the complete technology of a water mill can be seen, and a working bake oven stands in the mill yard. The museum is run by volunteers.
