About the museum
The Afrika-Museum in Sülze, a district of the town of Bergen, goes back to village schoolteacher Harry Lotze, who assembled the collection for his pupils almost 100 years ago. In the 1930s it even toured northern Germany as a traveling exhibition.
Today Eva and Stefan in der Beeck run the museum; both have lived in Africa themselves. Their guiding idea is “Understanding Africa by touching”: almost all exhibits may be handled. Visitors can, for example, measure the longest snake, climb a Lobi ladder or blow the Königstrompete (royal trumpet).
The collection features specimens of animal and plant life, everyday objects, cultural artifacts and photos, conveying a sense of the size and diversity of the continent. Personal guided tours share interesting facts and curiosities and also ask what we can learn from Africa.
