Heimatmuseum Römstedthaus
Local history museum in four historic buildings in Bergen with a smoke house, tithe barn, stair granary and Bronze Age finds from the area.
About the museum
The museum goes back to the Bergen teacher and local historian Friedrich Römstedt, who collected furniture, tools and everyday objects of the region. The Heimatverein Bergen (local heritage association), under his chairmanship, acquired an old farmstead in the village center in 1912, whose origins date back to the 15th century, and set up the local history museum there; in 1929 it was given the name Römstedthaus. After Römstedt's death the house passed into a foundation.
The main house is a half-timbered smoke house with a Lower Saxon gable that was still inhabited until 1912 and preserves a historic hearth and original furnishings. There are also a former tithe barn, a two-story stair granary from the 18th century, and a small granary that was moved to the grounds in 1984/85. All the buildings are protected as historic monuments.
The exhibitions show home life, farming and crafts until around 1900, the path from flax to linen, and a significant collection of Bronze Age finds, most of which were discovered in the vicinity of Bergen. On the upper floor of the main house, annually changing exhibitions can be seen; a farmhouse garden completes the ensemble.
