Temporarily closed. The building is closed for renovation and reinstallation. The museum is to reopen after the redesign under a new name and with a new concept; no date has been published. The outdoor area continues to be used for events such as baking days and summer festivals.

About the museum

As early as 1909, a museum association was founded in Hermannsburg under Pastor Max Harms. The collection was first housed in a traditional farmhouse, which fell victim to arson in 1978. Many exhibits could be saved and found a place in a modern building on Harmsstraße, which also housed the municipal library.

Since 2000 the Förderkreis Heimatmuseum im Heimatbund Hermannsburg has run the museum. It staged special exhibitions that changed every year and developed the outdoor area: with a historic clay bread oven, two stair granaries from the 17th and 18th centuries, a meeting place with a village square, and a cottager's house (Häuslingshaus) moved from Baven, where weddings also take place. Baking days, the "Hermannsburger Feierabende" and the harvest festival are recurring events.

The building was cleared from 2022 for a core renovation and expanded to include a family and community center. After funding was approved, the reinstallation began: under the guiding idea "Heimat", themed islands are to be created, for example on schools and rural life. The museum is to be renamed "Heimatinseln Hermannsburg. Das Museum".
