About the museum

The Ludwig-Harms-Haus in Hermannsburg is regarded as the birthplace of the Hermannsburg Mission, which made the town known around the world in the southern Lüneburg Heath. In its more than 160-year history the building served as a training center for the first mission trainees, as a print shop and as a mission shop; a collection of ethnological objects still recalls the mission's eventful history today.

Today the house is the showcase of the Evangelisch-lutherisches Missionswerk in Niedersachsen (ELM). For a long time the permanent exhibition "Candace – Partner in Mission" showed, on more than 300 square meters, how the Hermannsburg mission institute became today's mission agency with partner churches in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Now the experience exhibition "time to change" has taken over this role.

On almost 500 square meters, "time to change" leads visitors through eight themes in six rooms. Visitors explore the rooms, solve puzzles, play a game on five interactive monitors and find out what kind of engagement type they are. The focus is on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the question of what a mission agency does in the 21st century; the history of the mission is viewed critically. The building also houses a bookshop, a fair trade shop and a café-restaurant.
