About the museum

The museum is run by the Nordpfälzer Geschichtsverein, a historical society founded in 1904 on a local-heritage basis, which operates the building in Rockenhausen. The building on Bezirksamtsstraße dates from 1926; the front garden was laid out and opened in 1930.

Between 2017 and 2023 the museum was thoroughly renovated and given a new concept. Across two floors with roughly 450 square meters of exhibition space, the focus is now on the concept of "Heimat" (home region). The ground floor covers the land around the Donnersberg, and the upper floor presents Rockenhausen as a town through the ages. Listening and video stations complement the objects.

The exhibition traces history from prehistory and early history through Celtic and Roman settlements, castles and monasteries, to mining. It also covers traditional crafts, agriculture and beekeeping, the town's twin-town partnerships and well-known local figures. Already in the front garden stands the Roman fountain from Katzenbach, discovered in 1911 and rebuilt here. The museum also houses a collection of cast-iron stoves by the Gienanth firm, a regional library with works dating back to the 16th century, and an archive with files, charters and school logbooks from closed schools.
