About the museum

The half-timbered house on Lübecker Straße was built in 1541, a few years after Segeberg had been almost completely destroyed in the Count's Feud. Initially it was a simple hall house with a large entrance hall, parlor and kitchen; early owners included councilmen, mayors and Danish governors such as Heinrich Rantzau. Around 1585 a floor was added – the small bedroom "Upkamer" and the richly carved street gable date from this time.

Later generations, mainly craftsmen, remodeled the house several times; in 1814, for example, a lodger's apartment was added. In 1949 the town bought the dilapidated building, which remained inhabited until 1959 and was then to be demolished. With state funds it was elaborately restored in 1963/64 and opened in November 1964 as a municipal local history museum.

Since 2012 the museum has been run by the Bad Segeberg adult education center (Volkshochschule). In the following years, two new permanent exhibitions were created: one shows the development of middle-class living culture through the residents and their rooms, the other the history of the town from the medieval castle settlement on the Kalkberg to the spa town and the Karl May Festival. In 2017, a virtual city model "Segeberg anno 1600" was created with HafenCity University Hamburg. Since 2021 the volunteer-run house has been called Museum Segeberger Bürgerhaus.
