About the museum
The museum's roots go back to the imperial era: in 1906 a civic museum commission first showed a small exhibition of local antiquities at the Kurhaus. Plans for a permanent building were adopted in 1913 and 1923 but never realized. Only in 1931 was the museum founded in the Blue House on the Hude; its core was the private collection of the pharmacist and local historian Wolfgang Sonder, who also took over its management.
In 1943 the permanent display was closed and put into storage. After Sonder's death in 1955 the town acquired the collection, and in 1969 the museum reopened in the former district court building on Mühlenstraße. Since 1977 it has been on the upper floor of the former town school, which now houses the town library. The present form of the permanent exhibition dates from a fundamental redesign in 2011/12; since 2013 Petra-Maria Schark has led the house.
The collection offers insights into the history of the town and the district of Stormarn, with a focus on local prehistory and early history. A storage area in the attic of the town library, which mainly shows historical crafts, complements it.
