About the museum
The small forge in Bedesbach was probably built between 1845 and 1873 and is today a listed monument. For around a hundred years, roughly from 1850 to 1950, a village blacksmith worked here for the local people, making and repairing agricultural tools and shoeing horses. Three generations of smiths used the workshop.
The complete equipment has survived beneath the soot-blackened ceiling: hammers and tongs in many shapes, the large bellows, and a bending and upsetting machine for wagon tires. Special items include a horseshoe more than a thousand years old and the smithy's ledger with orders from 1886. Today the forge is a municipal museum and can be visited by appointment; a smith explains how the work was done and demonstrates it in practice.
