About the museum
The Steinbruchmuseum Rammelsbach is located at its original site, on the ground floor of the quarry's former administration, or office, building. The large quarry, popularly called the "Dimpel," opened in 1868. Until 1972, it produced mainly paving stones from melaphyr, a fine-grained dark rock that is also called Kuselit after the neighboring town.
In four rooms, the exhibition shows the path from rock to finished paving stone: stone was drilled, blasted, and hewn by hand into paving stones by the "Abrichter" (dressers). Staged displays reproduce the work steps, along with original tools, a replica of a forge, old documents, and a large collection of boulders, especially geodes (Drusen). A slide show of historic photos on a large screen conveys the former working life; outdoor exhibits complement the tour.
The museum is run by the municipality and cared for by a volunteer team. Tours were previously given by a former paving stone dresser.
