About the museum
The "Alte Mühle" in Proschim is a brick building from the early 20th century, built as the electrically powered successor to a post windmill on the same site. The buildings form a closed four-sided farmstead; the roof, façades and windows have been renovated in recent years, and parts of the milling machinery are still in place.
The association Traditionelle Landtechnik und bäuerliche Lebensart Proschim e. V. shows an exhibition on the folklore of the region here: rustic furniture, household appliances, village crafts and above all a collection of historic farm machinery of significance beyond the region. Across three floors it covers the history of the mill and the village, straw processing, butter-making and baking, potato growing, shoemaking, weaving, spinning and beekeeping; in the courtyard it covers small livestock keeping, home slaughtering, the bakehouse and laundry. The labelling is bilingual, German and Sorbian/Wendish.
The exhibition is regularly supplemented with new items. For the village festival there is an annual special show, and on event days such as German Mill Day the association demonstrates farm machinery and old household appliances. The mill is part of the Lausitzer Museenland.
