About the museum
The collection was first housed in the Welzow district of Haidemühl, in the halls of the machine workshop of the former briquette factory. When the village had to give way to lignite open-cast mining, the site was demolished, and the exhibition moved into two new halls in the Welzow business and industrial park.
Today the museum displays about 42 fire engines, 20 motor pumps and 12 trailers, along with fire-fighting accessories, shoulder boards, honor badges and equipment. The oldest piece is a hand-operated pump from the 1920s, from the era when firefighters rushed to call-outs by bicycle or on foot. There are also special vehicles from state-owned enterprises of the GDR, including a fire-fighting tank, which were painstakingly restored over many working hours and are still being restored. The association lends out vehicles and equipment, and opens the museum with special hours for the Museum Night in the Spree-Neiße district.
