About the museum
Tätzschwitz is a small Sorbian-influenced village in the municipality of Elsterheide, on the Saxony–Brandenburg border. The Schul- und Heimatstube opened as a village museum in 2001, in the building of the former elementary school.
The exhibition shows school history from the imperial era to the 1980s, including original notes by the teacher of that time, pupils' essays and curricula. A small display also looks at life and work in the large Sorbian family on the village farm, with a costume room and an exhibit on the Sorbian peasant wedding. In the flax room, visitors can follow the laborious process from raw flax to linen cloth.
Guided tours are led by staff in traditional Sorbian costume. Kindergarten groups also visit the house and experience lessons as they were in the past.
