About the museum
The museum was founded in 1883 by the Herborn history society; since 1939 it has belonged to the town. The collections have been housed in the historic Kollegbau of the Hohe Schule since the early 20th century. This reformed academy was founded in 1584 by Count Johann VI of Nassau; in the early modern period it was an important center of Calvinism and existed until 1817. From 1818 a theological seminary used the building.
The section on the Hohe Schule shows teaching materials, anatomical specimens, a Stammbuch (friendship album) and prints from the Herborn print shop, including the famous Piscator Bible. There is also a pharmacy section with a dispensary from around 1880, and an archaeological display that traces changes in settlement and daily life in the Dill region from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages. Miniature models explain Stone Age techniques; Celtic and medieval finds complement them.
In the attic floors are smaller display rooms on domestic life, inns, kitchens and crafts of the 18th and 19th centuries, including a stocking-knitting frame from around 1800. Pottery from Herborn and Breitscheid, as well as weapons and ground finds from wartime air raids, round out the collection. Since August 2026, fire-protection and technical work has been underway in the building, so the museum is currently closed.
