About the museum
Construction of the Lüneburg town hall began around 1230, and over roughly 700 years it was repeatedly rebuilt and extended. With its 259 rooms, the building shows traces of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods and is considered the largest medieval town hall in northern Germany.
The Gerichtslaube (court arcade), Fürstensaal (princes' hall), Altes Archiv (old archive), Kanzlei (chancery) and Bürgermeisterkammer (mayor's chamber) date from the Gothic and Renaissance periods. The Große Ratsstube (great council chamber), with its woodwork and ceiling paintings, is one of the largest Renaissance halls in Germany. The Huldigungssaal (homage hall) and the market facade date from the Baroque period, and the tower houses a carillon made of Meissen porcelain.
The town hall is still the seat of the city administration. The most beautiful rooms can therefore only be visited on a guided tour of about one hour, offered by Lüneburg Marketing through the Tourist-Information.
