About the museum
The Kunstsammlung Henning J. Claassen opened on September 1, 2022, in the center of Lüneburg on St.-Ursula-Weg. Behind it is the Lüneburg entrepreneur and honorary citizen Henning J. Claassen, who has assembled contemporary art from many countries over five decades. After a former gallery in the Altes Kaufhaus closed, a dedicated museum building was created for the collection, designed by the Lüneburg architect Carl-Peter von Mansberg.
The collection comprises more than 500 paintings, prints and sculptures. Around 100 works are shown at a time, and the selection changes every year; the emphasis is on breadth and international diversity. On the ground floor, the museum includes a café with a panoramic window and a lounge. The concert series "Musik trifft Kunst" also regularly brings music to the museum.
