About the museum
Kloster Lüne was founded in 1172 as a Benedictine convent and still exists today as a Protestant monastic community. The complex has been preserved almost completely in its historical form and, alongside religious life, also hosts concerts, lectures and exhibitions.
The Klostermuseum, a building erected in 1995, displays one of the most important collections of High and Late Medieval German textile art. What makes it special: the pieces were made in the convent itself and remain in the place where they were created. The nuns embroidered and wove bench covers, altar cloths and Lenten veils according to the principle "Ora et labora".
The treasures include textiles from the 13th and 14th centuries, two processional banners from around 1410, and large embroidered hangings that were displayed only at major church feasts. The weaving tradition continues in a weaving workshop on the grounds.
