Municipal gallery in the historic Old Town Hall of Wittlich with a permanent exhibition on the glass artist Georg Meistermann and changing exhibitions.
The local history exhibition traces the mills in the Liesertal valley from the Rothmühle to the Schladter Mühle and highlights their economic and cultural significance for Wittlich and the region.
About the museum
The Old Town Hall on Wittlich's market square was built between 1650 and 1652 on medieval foundations after the town fire of 1647. After further fires in 1689 and 1707, it received its curved gable with the figure of Saint Roch, the plague saint and patron saint of the town. From 1922 to 1924 it was extended along Neustraße in matching forms. For the staircase, Georg Meistermann created in 1954 the four-part window cycle of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as a reminder of the wartime destruction.
Until 1984, the town administration worked here. With a show on Meistermann's drawings and graphic work in the summer of 1984, the building became a municipal gallery. On 11 December 1994, Mayor Helmut Hagedorn and the artist's widow opened the Städtische Galerie (municipal gallery), which shows a large part of his estate from the donation to the town.
The ground floor presents a selection from all phases of Meistermann's career – paintings, prints and large-format designs for stained-glass windows. The town uses the second floor for changing exhibitions on art, photography and cultural history. Wittlich also has numerous other stained-glass windows by the artist in churches and public buildings.
