About the museum
The synagogue was built in 1909/10 in the Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil) with neo-Romanesque touches and dedicated in November 1910. For centuries it was the center of a Jewish community whose history in Wittlich goes back to the 14th century.
During the Pogromnacht of 1938 the interior was destroyed. The city then acquired the building and used it during the Second World War, among other things, as a camp for prisoners of war. A Jewish community no longer existed after 1945.
From 1976 the city renovated the building, and in 1985 it reopened as a cultural and conference venue. Today it hosts concerts, lectures, and commemorative events. In the annex, the exhibition "Jüdisches Leben in Wittlich", redesigned in 2022, presents the history of the community across three levels. A memorial plaque in the former Torah niche commemorates its fate.
