About the museum
Amalie Dietrich was born in Siebenlehn in 1821 and died in Rendsburg in 1891. In 1863 she traveled to Australia on behalf of the Hamburg trading house Godeffroy and collected plants, animals and ethnographic objects there; her collection is considered the largest ever assembled by a single person. Many natural history and ethnological museums in Europe hold pieces from her hand.
During a visit to her hometown in 1875, she gave the old school she had attended as a child a series of duplicates from her collection. These bird specimens, reptiles, herbaria and ethnographic objects form the core of the small exhibition that the Schulförderverein Siebenlehn (school support association), with the support of the Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig, set up in the town hall. Nine panels tell her life story, and projects by the primary school supplement the display.
The Amalie-Dietrich-Gedenkweg, a nature trail past a memorial stone, a park and the plaque on her birthplace, begins at the town hall.
