About the museum
Roßwein honorary citizen and Kammerrat (court councillor) Oswald Naupert proposed to the town council in 1914 that a local history museum be set up in the Abthaus. The building was erected between 1537 and 1540 by the last abbot of Altzella Monastery, Andreas Schmiedewald. Due to war and a shortage of money, the idea was only realized in 1924, by the senior teachers (Oberlehrer) Hiller and Löbel, with help from craftsmen and pupils.
The entrance is framed by a Renaissance portal with seating niches; the original porphyry portal was replaced in 1975 by a sandstone copy. After conversion and restoration, the museum has presented itself in a new form since November 30, 2002.
The permanent exhibition includes the town history, a magnificent stove made of Meissen tiles, musical automata, and a tribute to Roßwein's honorary citizens, to whom Naupert belongs. A third room with a barrel vault, popularly called the "Tonne" (barrel), is reserved for changing exhibitions. The Heimatverein Roßwein (local heritage association) looks after the museum and opens it by arrangement and on special occasions.
