Museum im Amtshaus
Local history museum in the half-timbered Amtshaus (administrative office) of 1596 in Grünsfeld, with sacred art, locks and chests, and a stonemason's workshop.
About the museum
Until secularization in 1803, the Amtshaus on Schloßstraße was the seat of the Grünsfeld district office of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg; from here the bailiff administered the associated villages. A date on the door frame points to 1596, and the courtyard gate arch bears the year 1691. The two-story half-timbered house with decorative details on the street side contains 17th-century stucco ceilings and a Baroque staircase.
After the town of Grünsfeld acquired the building, it was extensively renovated and restored in the 1990s and set up as a museum. It is run by the Kulturverein Grünsfeld, a cultural association devoted to preserving local heritage, which also looks after a Heimatstube (local heritage room) founded back in 1983.
The focus is on sacred artworks and religious objects, along with a collection of locks, metal fittings and money chests and documentation of the building's renovation. Directly adjoining it, an educational stonemasonry and sculpture workshop was created, showing works and tools of Grünsfeld stonemasons who worked the local shell limestone. Changing special exhibitions are held several times a year.
