About the museum
Around 300 AD, under the emperors Diocletian and Maximian Herculius, the fort Caelius Mons, Latin for "Heaven's Mountain," was built on the plateau of the high bank of the Iller. The massive complex, with a gate structure and corner and intermediate towers, secured the western border of the Roman province of Raetia as an important base on the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes. In the early 4th century, a unit of around 300 men is to be expected here.
First excavations took place in 1901 during the construction of the town's first water supply; a systematic scientific investigation of the fort buildings followed from 1986 to 1993. Since 1995, an archaeological trail marked with colored paving stones has shown the course of the fort walls in the town center of Kellmünz; it starts at the St. Martin's church. Wall remains have been reconstructed on the park grounds.
The museum tower stands on ancient foundations. Photographs and replicas document the history of the province of Raetia and the results of the excavations; a media station shows the virtual ideal reconstruction of one of the largest late Roman forts in present-day Bavaria, and a short film brings the site to life. The museum is run by the Neu-Ulm district (Landkreis Neu-Ulm).
