About the museum
Anton Fugger acquired the lordship of Babenhausen in Swabia in 1538 and had the Neues Schloss (New Castle) built there. His youngest son Jakob founded the Fugger-Babenhausen line, which still owns the castle today.
The Fuggermuseum was set up in the castle in 1955 at the initiative of Friedrich Carl Fugger; until World War II its collection had been housed in the Fugger houses in Augsburg. In about twelve rooms it showed goldsmith's art, glass, porcelain, sculptures, weapons, books, furniture and sacred art documenting six centuries of family history. The Ancestors' Hall with family portraits from the 16th and 17th centuries was also open to visitors.
For several years the museum has no longer been open to visitors; according to the Fugger administration it is closed until further notice.
