About the museum
The Egerland community "Gmoi" in Illertissen was founded on August 28, 1952; the following year the municipal council took on the sponsorship of the Sudeten German town of Elbogen (today Loket in the Czech Republic). Many expelled Elbogeners brought mementos with them, including documents, porcelain, minerals, pictures and even a nail from the old chain bridge of their home town.
From these items an Elbogen local history room was set up in 1960, which the town of Illertissen newly furnished in 1984 together with the Egerland Gmoi and the expelled Elbogeners. Around 1,500 objects – photos, costumes and keepsakes – documented the history and customs of Egerland and especially of the town of Elbogen. A separate room with furniture and household items of the postwar period showed how the expellees started anew in Germany.
The house on Hauptstraße next to the town hall was renovated; the collection has been in storage since then. According to the town of Illertissen, the Egerland Museum is currently being redesigned after the renovation of the Adler building and is to show the history and culture of the Sudetenland in nine rooms in the future.
