About the museum

The Kunstmuseum Bayreuth opened in December 1999. The impetus came from the Kunststiftung Dr. Helmut und Constanze Meyer, whose holdings still form a core of the collection today. The museum is run by the city of Bayreuth.

It is housed in the Old Town Hall at the corner of Maximilianstraße and Brautgasse. The building dates back to the 16th century; in 1721 it passed to a hospital foundation, which made it available to the city as a town hall, and it received its Baroque appearance between 1722 and 1727. The city administration met here until 1917 and again from 1945 to 1972, after which the police used the building. It was extensively renovated before the museum opened. The building also commemorates the November Pogrom of 1938, when Jewish citizens were detained in the courtyard before being deported to concentration camps.

The collection comprises around 20,000 works, mostly prints, drawings and watercolors, ranging from Expressionism and Constructivism through Surrealism and New Objectivity to Concrete Art, Conceptual Art and Fluxus. It is complemented by further foundations and gifts, such as the Georg Tappert gift, as well as a large poster collection. The museum presents its holdings in changing thematic exhibitions and also runs an exhibition hall in the New Town Hall.
