About the museum
The Historisches Museum goes back to a city council resolution of 1894 and is considered the city's oldest museum. For decades the collection was housed in changing, unsuitable premises, including the Neues Schloss.
In the 1980s the city decided to convert the former Latin school on Kirchplatz, most recently used by the fire brigade, into a museum. Since 1996 the collection has been on show there on three floors; the concept was soon afterwards awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize.
The tour follows the city's history from the Middle Ages to the present and focuses on the period as a margravial residence. Among its special features is an extensive collection of Bayreuth faience from the St. Georgen manufactory founded in 1715. A friends' association supports the museum.
