About the museum
The Atelier Ludwig Leitz in Wetzlar has been open to visitors since September 1984. It presents the artistic work of Ludwig Leitz (1907–1992) in the place where it was created.
Leitz studied mathematics and physics and trained as a sculptor on the side, in Vienna in 1926 and in Berlin in 1927 with Johannes Itten. In 1939 he took over responsibility for the entire development department of the family firm Leitz and shaped many patented and design innovations of its products. His artistic work therefore had to take a back seat to his profession, although he followed contemporary art closely.
Design sketches, models and bronze casts of his sculptures show his aim of drawing the essential form out of the accidental appearance of things.
