About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Garbenheim is located in a farmhouse at the corner of Untergasse and Kirchstraße. It was built after 1866 to replace a predecessor that, together with barns and stables, fell victim to a major village fire. In 1965 the Raiffeisenbank Wetzlar bought the property and, after demolishing the barn and part of the stables, built a bank building. The residential house and the other outbuildings passed to the city of Wetzlar in 1980.

After the half-timbering was uncovered and restored, the interior thoroughly renovated and the outbuildings repaired, the local history collection moved in. The house owes its existence to village residents, who preserved, donated or lent historical items. The Heimatverein Garbenheim, supported by the city, pushed for the idea of a museum of its own.

The museum shows the prehistory and early history of the region, local and church history, and the working world of rural people, craftsmen and miners, including traditional costumes and tools. The inventory includes a farmhouse sleeping room, a farm kitchen, a working village forge, and a shoemaker's and a carpenter's workshop. One room commemorates the expellees and refugees who found a new home in Garbenheim after World War II. Under the roof there is a room for temporary exhibitions.
