50 Jahre Audi Fünfzylindermotor

About the museum

The Audi museum mobile opened on December 15, 2000, together with the Audi Forum Ingolstadt at AUDI AG's main plant. The round glass-and-steel building, about 23 meters tall, was designed by architect Gunter Henn; its ring-shaped layout is inspired by the growth rings of a tree and is meant to express both permanence and change.

On some 6,000 square meters, the museum tells the story of the brands from which Audi emerged. An elevator serving as a “time machine” first takes visitors to the top floor and back to 1899, when August Horch founded his first company. From there, the tour leads via the founding of the Audi works in Zwickau in 1909 and the merger of Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer to form Auto Union in 1932 to the new beginning in Ingolstadt after World War II and Audi's development into today's premium brand. The two levels of the permanent exhibition are divided into the periods 1899–1945 and 1946–2000.

The vehicles are placed in their economic and social context, so a visit is also a journey through the 20th century. Dedicated areas cover motorsport, from the Auto Union racing cars through the rally era to the DTM and Le Mans. A paternoster lift visible from outside moves changing vehicles through all floors, a technology gallery explains engines and materials at hands-on stations, and a separate level hosts changing special exhibitions.
