Works by the artist Judith Hopf meet steel works by Alf Lechner. Everyday things such as walls, tyres and suitcases lose their function, while Lechner's coin-like steel bodies take up the field of tension between movement and standstill.
About the museum
The Lechner Museum opened in 2000 and is dedicated to the work of the Munich steel sculptor Alf Lechner (1925–2017). In 1999 the artist had founded the Alf Lechner Stiftung, which supports the museum in Ingolstadt and runs its program.
The museum is housed in a sawtooth-roof hall from the 1950s, where cars were once produced. The architects Erhard and Florian Fischer stripped the hall back to its supporting structure, clad the cubic building in bright aluminum composite panels and added a glass foyer on the north side. For the conversion they received the Deutscher Fassadenpreis in 2001. Since then, changing presentations have been shown on about 1,800 square meters.
The program combines Lechner's own work with exhibitions by contemporary artists, accompanied by catalogs. A second site of the foundation is the Skulpturenpark in Obereichstätt, which Lechner laid out from 2001 on a former ironworks site; it is accessible only as part of a guided tour.
