About the museum
Johann Caspar Aurnhammer founded the town's first weaving and passementerie factory in Treuchtlingen in 1774. Passementerie refers to trimmings for fabrics, such as braids, lace and appliqués. In 1789 he acquired the Stadtschloss, which was threatened with decay; the family then lived and worked there.
The company made tassels, braids and a wide range of uniform trimmings, as well as very fine lace and braids made of metal threads and various yarns. Around 1880, at the height of the business, the family employed about 700 people, some of whom also worked as home workers. The company shaped the town's affairs significantly in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The collection was conceived and set up by Hans Aurnhammer. It shows exhibits and photos of the family, as well as a cross-section of the manufactory's production from its beginnings to the mid-20th century. It is housed in the Renaissance Stadtschloss, which has also been home to the Kur- und Touristinformation (spa and tourist information office) since the 1980s; the city partly bought the building in 1979.
