Municipal museum in Treuchtlingen with one of the largest folk culture collections in Bavaria and a permanent exhibition on 6,000 years of town history.
International travelling exhibition with 22 biographies from the “Gedächtnisbuch Dachau” about prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp, supplemented by banners on clergy in the camp; with research by pupils on persecuted residents of Treuchtlingen.
About the museum
Following a city council resolution of 1970, the museum opened on July 6, 1973. The driving force was the collector Josef Lidl. It was housed in a former braid and trimmings factory opposite the Stadtschloss (town palace).
Within a few years space ran short. The city acquired the neighboring listed Lang-Haus, where the Jewish livestock dealer family Lang lived until 1938, and later two more industrial buildings, which served as a depot and briefly as a natural history museum. After Josef Lidl, Johannes Dankbar became director in the 1990s; in the early 2000s the biotechnician Marlit Bauch joined. Renovations up to 2019 renewed the entrance area and the ground floor; since then, visitors enter the building through the museum café. Since 2022 the entire building, including the collection, has been undergoing a redesign.
The collection comprises more than 30,000 objects from the Celtic period to the 20th century, ranging from crafts and agriculture to historical musical instruments, toys and railway history, and to costumes and furniture. The permanent exhibition follows a chronological path from prehistory through the Roman period and the Middle Ages to the living worlds of the 17th to 20th centuries in the Blue House (Blaues Haus).
