About the museum
The Ortssammlung Wettelsheim (local collection) is run by a local association that has existed since 1924 as the Altertumsfreunde (friends of antiquities). Wettelsheim, today the largest district of Treuchtlingen in the Altmühltal Nature Park, was first mentioned in a charter of Henry III in 1044. Local history enthusiasts from the village and surrounding municipalities collected, restored and prepared the objects for display.
The museum occupies two buildings in the Amtshof (historic administration complex), owned by the town of Treuchtlingen, about 50 meters apart. About 2,000 objects are displayed across roughly 400 square meters. In the first building, the first floor has a pottery workshop, ceramics from the 19th and 20th centuries, equipment from both World Wars and a Roman figure of Mercury. The second floor shows craft workshops for carpenters, masons and shoemakers, prehistoric finds, medieval and modern household items, and regional costumes. On the third floor are a classroom from around 1900, household goods, toys and an extensive local archive.
The second building is devoted to agriculture and displays, among other things, a ladder cart, a wooden plow, a replica of a blacksmith's forge and a loom from the 17th or 18th century.
