About the museum
The first tower on the Kranichsberg was built in 1886 by the Verschönerungsverein (beautification association) and was a popular destination for Berliners until 1945. It burned down in April 1945. In 1961 the municipality decided to build a new wooden tower, which was erected together with the forestry enterprise as a combined fire-watch and observation tower.
The tower, about 25 meters high, offers a platform with a wide view over forests and lakes after roughly 90 steps. Inside the tower, the exhibition "Als Woltersdorf noch Hollywood war" (When Woltersdorf Was Still Hollywood) uses articles, posters and collages to show how films were made in Woltersdorf and the surrounding area during the silent film era. The tower is looked after by the Woltersdorfer Verschönerungsverein Kranichsberg.
