About the museum
The Residenzmuseum is set up in Schloss Neuhaus, a Renaissance building from the 16th century that served the Paderborn prince-bishops as their residence. Dietrich von Fürstenberg expanded it into a closed four-wing palace, and Clemens August of Bavaria added a stable building and a baroque garden in the 18th century; the garden has been partly reconstructed today.
The permanent exhibition spans two floors and covers the construction, rule and everyday history of the prince-bishops' residence. In the Remter, a hall with a vaulted ceiling supported by columns, the building's development is explained through structural remains, models and a media reconstruction. Finds from the castle moat, recovered by the researcher Hans Joachim Nachtmann, make the everyday life of the castle's residents tangible.
On the principal floor (Belle Etage), carefully restored state rooms from the reign of Clemens August show the self-image of the prince-bishops' rule, including the princely dining room. Hands-on stations invite visitors to take on the roles of gardeners, painters or court architects from the 16th to 18th centuries. The museum belongs to the Städtische Museen und Galerien Paderborn (municipal museums and galleries).
