In the Baroque Marstall (stables) of Schloß Neuhaus, the city of Paderborn shows a natural history museum for the region and the Nachtmann glass and ceramics collection.
Participatory exhibition on the upper floor of the Natural History Museum about the Pader as a habitat, a place of culture and a source of stories, with a virtual dive, bird sounds and experience stations.
About the museum
The Marstall of Schloß Neuhaus was built between 1729 and 1733 under Prince-Bishop Clemens August of Bavaria, to plans by court and state master builder Franz Christoph Nagel. On the first floor, more than 100 horses found room; the central section and the adjoining quarter-arches served as carriage houses. From 1820, the Prussian military used the complex as a cavalry building; from 1945 to 1990, British troops were stationed there. In 1991, the city of Paderborn acquired the building and had it thoroughly restored.
For the 1994 Landesgartenschau (state garden show), a historical museum and the Naturkundemuseum (natural history museum) were set up in the Marstall. The latter goes back to a collection established in 1922 by the Ausschuss für Naturkunde in Westfalen (Committee for Natural History in Westphalia), a predecessor of the Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein Paderborn. The bombing raid of March 27, 1945 almost completely destroyed the building at the time; after the holdings were rebuilt, the society transferred them to the city as a permanent loan in 1992. Today the museum occupies around 600 square meters in the central section.
In December 2002, the Nachtmann glass and ceramics collection was added. The historical museum section was closed at the end of 2014; its themes are to be shown in the Residenzmuseum in the castle. Since 2016, the city has been presenting an art museum for contemporary art in the vacated rooms.
