Schloss Allstedt
Castle and palace complex above Allstedt, once a royal palatinate (Königspfalz), with an immersive exhibition on Thomas Müntzer and his Sermon to the Princes of 1524.
About the museum
First mentioned in the 9th century as "Alstediburg," Allstedt was a significant imperial palatinate in the 10th to 12th centuries, where numerous kings and emperors held assemblies. The stump of a late Romanesque residential tower survives from that time. In the 13th and 14th centuries the Lords of Querfurt expanded the complex into a fortified castle with walls up to 3.50 meters thick.
In the 16th century Elector Frederick the Wise had the castle converted into a Renaissance palace; later alterations left traces from Gothic to Historicism. In 1524 the reformer Thomas Müntzer, then pastor in Allstedt, delivered his "Sermon to the Princes" in the palace before Duke John and his son.
After 1918 the complex stood empty for a long time, served as quarters for Nazi youth organizations, and after the war as refugee housing and residential housing. In 1975 a Müntzer memorial was set up in the inner castle. Since 2023 the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt (Cultural Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt) has looked after the palace, which was initially closed because of its structural condition. Since July 2025, selected areas of the inner castle have been accessible again with the exhibition "SEIN und SCHEIN. Thomas Müntzer," while renovation continues.
