About the museum
The Kultur- und Heimatverein Schraplau (cultural and heritage association) was founded in 1990 and opened a local history room in 1993. When the association's rooms moved to Schulstraße 1, it set up a small local history museum next door, which it still runs today.
One room displays old household items, photos and maps of Schraplau, as well as coins and banners. Another room shows the old castle clock from the 17th century. The third room presents excavation finds and minerals from the region.
The highlight of the exhibition is a stone-cist grave from around 2200 BC. It was the first to be discovered during the excavations before the construction of the A38 near Esperstedt and contains the bones and grave goods of two related infants, probably twins. The State Office for Archaeology and Monument Preservation (Landesamt für Archäologie und Denkmalpflege) has loaned the grave to the museum on a permanent basis. The museum shop sells, among other things, a picture book with old and new views of Schraplau.
