About the museum
Blankensee was first documented in 1307. The museum is housed in the village's oldest residential building, a Brandenburg central-hall house (Mittelflurhaus). The half-timbered house is thought to date from around 1649 and combined living quarters, stable and barn under one roof, which made feeding the livestock easier and also provided insulation. Its size was by no means typical for the villages of the Thümenscher Winkel, which were mostly manor and cottager villages. The building was reconstructed from 1976 to 1981.
The exhibition shows how people here lived, worked and got by about 200 to 300 years ago: for example in the black kitchen, with the stables under the same roof, and in everyday life without electricity, heating or running water. The museum offers a program of events and works with the local primary school, whose age-appropriate project days sharpen the children's appreciation for cultural heritage.
The village keeps up Brandenburg traditions, such as the annual rye harvest and the later threshing, and has repeatedly won top places in village renewal competitions.
