Spargelmuseum Beelitz
Northern Germany's only asparagus museum in a historic coach house in Beelitz's old town – botany, cultivation, and cultural history of asparagus.
About the museum
Beelitz has been closely associated with asparagus since the 19th century. In 1861, the farmer-citizen Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Herrmann planted the first asparagus field here, and other Beelitz residents followed. The proximity to the Berlin market made cultivation profitable, and after 1900 asparagus was also exported. In the 1920s and 1930s, Beelitz, with about 625 hectares of cultivated area, was the center of asparagus growing in the Mark Brandenburg; today asparagus is again harvested on about 1,500 hectares around the town.
The museum came about as a joint project of the town of Beelitz and the association "Beelitzer Spargel"; it opened in 1997. It is housed in a historic coach house building on Mauerstraße, just behind the courtyard of the Alte Posthalterei (Old Post Station), where the town operates another museum.
The exhibition spans the botany of the plant, cultivation techniques, and the history of Beelitz asparagus, as well as the art, cultural, and medical history surrounding the vegetable and the everyday life of the people who lived from asparagus. Many photographs come from Beelitz families, and loans such as asparagus servers and tableware recall the donors. The museum is open during the asparagus season and until the end of October.
