About the museum
Postmaster and mayor Gottlieb Ferdinand Kaehne had the house at Poststraße 16 built in 1789. The two-story classicist building with baroque echoes served as a post relay station and as the residence of the postmaster until 1871; until 1955 it was used only as a residence.
The town's local history museum then moved in; after it closed in 1973, the town library, the registry office and other parts of the administration followed. After several renovations that restored the original fabric, the rooms again serve as a museum. The Goethesaal (Goethe Hall) on the upper floor is the city's wedding hall.
The exhibition leads through the former post dispatch office (Expedition) and shows how the postal service worked: listening stations let travelers of the period tell of their journeys over dusty roads.
