Bauernmuseum Zabeltitz

Open-air museum on a more than 200-year-old three-wing farmstead in Zabeltitz, showing the everyday life of a farming family in the Großenhain Pflege region.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The stately three-wing farmstead has shaped the center of Zabeltitz for more than 200 years. As early as the 1970s, a museum concept of the district envisioned a specialist department on the development of agriculture. When the farm came up for sale after its owner died in 1980, the municipality bought it in 1981; in 1982 the GDR Ministry of Culture approved the founding, and in 1983 renovation and conversion began.

In the following decades the main house (1986/87) was restored, the retirement house (Auszugshaus) was partly demolished and rebuilt in 1990, and two open-sided sheds (1994 and 2009) created space for large machines. In 2010 Zabeltitz was incorporated into Großenhain; in 2015 toilets were added in the side building, and in 2020 the Kleine Stube (small parlor) was restored and a new visitor reception set up in the Auszugshaus.

The museum makes life on a traditional farm tangible. In 1901 Julius Wilhelm Händel and his family took over the estate; the living room, kitchen and bedrooms reflect that period. In the stable, feed kitchen, hayloft and barn, working tools are on view with which milk, butter, meat, bread or honey were produced. The museum grounds also include a beehouse, a log beehive (Klotzbeute) and a fenced cottage garden.
