About the museum

Members of the working group "Feuerwehrhistorik" from Riesa planned as early as the 1980s to show their restored fire vehicles to the public. After about seven years of conversion work on a former farm barn in Zeithain, the museum opened on August 20, 1994.

Since then the exhibition has grown considerably. On display are vehicles, equipment, uniforms, and gear from several eras – from hand-operated pumps through motor pumps and vehicles of the 1930s and 1940s to the fire service history of the GDR. In addition to fire engines, the collection also includes rescue vehicles and ambulances as well as an agricultural aircraft.

The museum is run by volunteers of the sponsoring association and is one of the larger fire service museums in Germany. In even-numbered years, the association invites visitors to a museum festival in mid-September. The association also runs a small fire service history exhibition in Schmannewitz near Dahlen.
