Bayerisches Schulmuseum
Branch museum of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Ichenhausen Palace on the history of teaching and learning – with hands-on stations and an old classroom.
About the museum
The Bayerisches Schulmuseum was established in 1984 as a branch museum of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Ichenhausen. It uses the Baroque Old Palace in the town center, which itself served as a schoolhouse for a long time from 1860, as well as neighboring buildings.
A new building completed in 2002 houses the foyer, special exhibition and event rooms; since 2015, studio rooms have also been available for workshops with school classes, children and families. In autumn 2018 a completely redesigned permanent exhibition opened, which tells the history of teaching and learning from the Stone Age to today in nine rooms, with a focus on Bavarian school history since the 19th century. At hands-on stations visitors can, for example, write in a medieval scriptorium, test their strength on a pulley, or calculate like Adam Ries.
Since May 2026, the section "Tora & Tablet" has added to the exhibition, on about 200 square meters, the history of Jewish education in Bavaria from the Middle Ages to the present. Together with the former synagogue and the Jewish cemetery, it strengthens the culture of remembrance in Ichenhausen. A historic classroom from around 1920 invites groups to reenacted lessons.
